Matthew Devonport

Having started my career working on building sites, I progressed from general labouring to more specialist work as a bricklayer - I’ve experienced first-hand how critical it is to have the right team of staff around you… Without this there is an increase in workload, more stress and ultimately deadlines aren’t met. I also found that when operating as a contractor it’s so important for the agency to communicate with you clearly as they are handling your wages, shift patterns etc.

  • I visited a recruitment agency in person so I could up-skill myself, to promote on site opportunities, but it was during this meeting that I was offered a position within the office… I had never worked in this sort of environment before, but I was advised that it could be a long term and rewarding career and I was up for the challenge.

    Having immediate success by joining a great team and putting my heart and soul into the business I managed to accumulate a database of thousands of contacts within my specialist area which was supplying trades and labour staff. I utilised my construction background to understand and empathise with our workers which ultimately resulted in a better service for clients we were working with.

    Fast forward a few years - I reached a point where I felt like I could go even further and improve on systems and processes. When working with larger more corporate companies their systems were more rigid which wasn't allowing me to give clients the best service possible. Driven by the desire to do things better, I listened to those around me and decided I was ready to start my own agency where I was entirely in control of how things were run.

    Since the inception of Alliance in 2019 my growing team and I are continuing to raise the standards in the recruitment industry.

I’ve worked as a Construction and Civils Recruitment Consultant for over 17 years', successfully supplying Trades & Labour and Site Management staff to Construction sites in London and across the South East England. Originally from Cardiff in South Wales, I went to University in Bristol and completed an Engineering degree with Honours.

Over the years I’ve established a large network of high quality and loyal Construction staff across the South of England. I’m able to supply all types of Trades & Labour, Machine Operators, Logistics, Commercial and Site Management Staff.

  • I pride myself in having a deep understanding of my clients projects requirements and culture. Always ensuring I work in collaboration with my clients office and site staff, to ensure the project stays on target. Our company provides independent training, briefing and tool box talks, maintaining a presence on site and offering an On Call service, with back up staff on ‘standby’ for shifts. I don’t see my client relationships as just a supplier/vendor relationship, I see Alliance Search as more as a subcontractor that is helping the project succeed.

I have a passion for the Construction Industry having worked in the sector for the last 18 years. Originally from Plymouth in Devon, I spent the first 11 years of my career working for a construction business there consisting of Scaffolding, Powered Access & Construction Training Divisions - The latter I headed as Director of Training - giving me an in depth understanding of various Construction accreditations and courses such as CSCS & CISRS Schemes, First Aid training, NEBOSH, SMSTS / SSSTS etc.

Since relocating to Bournemouth and finally settling in London - I have 6 years continuous Construction Sector recruitment experience working for some of the largest agencies in London, and in turn many well respected clients such as ISG, Wates, Mclaren, Buckingham Group, Galliford Try, Winvic, Westfield Shoppingtowns and Bowmer & Kirkland.

  • I have focused predominantly on ‘White Collar’ recruitment, assisting clients with freelance & permanent vacancies on a national basis. Roles have ranged from Document Control to Site Managers & Engineers, Quantity Surveyors, Contracts Managers & Design Managers to name a few.

    I thoroughly enjoy recruitment and find it very rewarding - Helping candidates secure their next career step or assignment, and building mutually beneficial and lasting client relationships are key to our business. I’ve seen first hand the frustrations sometimes faced when dealing with agencies so I believe honesty, transparency & good communication and key!
